Arab, Islamic Nations Condemn Settler Activities at Al Aqsa Mosque
In a coordinated statement issued Tuesday, the foreign ministers of Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Egypt described the incidents as provocative measures that violate international law, relevant United Nations resolutions and the longstanding legal and historical framework governing the holy sites in occupied East Jerusalem.
The ministers also criticized what they described as ongoing policies and actions by Israeli authorities aimed at changing the historical, legal and demographic character of East Jerusalem. The statement further expressed concern over measures viewed as affecting the sanctity and status of Islamic and Christian holy places in the city.
The participating countries reaffirmed their opposition to any attempts to alter the existing arrangements governing Jerusalem's religious sites. They emphasized the importance of preserving the established status quo and highlighted the role of the Hashemite Custodianship in safeguarding and overseeing the holy places.
The statement reiterated that the entire 144-dunam Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif compound is regarded as an exclusive Muslim place of worship. It also stressed that the Jerusalem Awqaf and Al Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, which operates under Jordan’s Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs and Holy Places, remains the sole legal body responsible for administering the site and regulating access to it.
The ministers warned that repeated actions and violations at the holy compound risk increasing regional tensions, contributing to instability and extremism, and undermining international efforts aimed at achieving peace. They also argued that such actions are inconsistent with obligations under international law.
Concluding their statement, the ministers called for an immediate halt to what they described as illegal and provocative practices and renewed their demand for full respect of the historical and legal status quo governing the entire Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif compound.
